Understanding Holistic Branding

Ever feel like brands are shouting to be heard in social media, emails, podcasts, YouTube videos, TikToks? Yeah, me too.

So how the heck do you make sure your brand is heard over all that noise?

You take an intentional, holistic approach to your branding and marketing. It's honestly no longer just an option. It's a game-changer.

It's part science, part art. You're infusing strategy, life, and soul into your brand. It's woven into every pixel, every word, and every interaction. And as a result? You tell your unique story without even realizing it. You create a memorable brand experience. (Which, btw, did you know that just by creating a brand experience, you're strengthening your brand loyalty? And, according to Sprout Social, this alone influences a staggering 58% of customers' decision to choose you over a competitor.)

Let's look at Vacation. This is a beach-loving sunscreen brand that pitches itself as more than just a product—it's a lifestyle. They haven't just slapped a logo on their product and called it a day. They've infused their brand into every touchpoint. Their brand voice can be described as nostalgic, luxurious, and approachable. And you can see that in their product description for their Classic Lotion: "Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen Lotion. “Leisure-Enhancing” & “Excessively Good” specifically designed to optimize recreation and protect skin for “Long days by the pool.”" and in their Instagram caption for their Classic Whip sunscreen:

You can even see it on their website and social media feed. Beyond their brand voice, they display their messaging through their visual identity. The photos and graphics absolutely have a retro vibe to them. The bright colors exude happiness. And the people in their photos, website, and social media? They're clearly enjoying vacation.

Vacation is establishing itself as more than just a brand. They're establishing themselves as a lifestyle.

The Core Elements of Holistic Branding

Ever noticed how some brands seem to effortlessly cut through the digital noise? It’s not just luck; it’s the magic of every facet of holistic branding working in perfect harmony with each other. It helps create a seamless user experience and drives brand success.

Let's look at some of the pillars of holistic branding.

  • Brand Strategy: At the heart of any magnetic brand is a well-crafted strategy. It's not just about sketching out plans; it’s the backbone of your brand. It dictates how you speak, how you engage, and how your audience perceives you. It’s the blueprint guiding every move you make. Read more: The Importance of a Brand Strategy.

  • Visual Identity: A stunning visual identity is more than just something pretty to look at; it's the face of your brand. Your visuals speak volumes before your words even get a chance. From the colors portray your vibe to the fonts that define your personality, these elements are the unsung heroes of your brand story.

  • Copywriting: Even though those visuals will grab attention first, none of it matters without a solid message and words to back it up. The act of crafting words that align with your brand and resonate with your audience? It's an art. Your copywriting is the persuasive power behind your brand's message. From captivating headlines to compelling calls-to-action, copywriting breathes life into your brand’s story.

  • Web Design: Your online home—the digital storefront for your brand. I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record here, but it’s not just about looking pretty; it's about functionality, experience, and telling your story seamlessly. A well-crafted website not only reflects your brand but invites your audience into an immersive, easy journey.

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization): You could have the best story to tell, but if nobody hears or sees it, does it even exist? SEO is the secret sauce that ensures your brand is seen online. It's not just about keywords; it’s about speaking the language of search engines and leading your audience straight to your door.

Now, here's where the magic truly unfolds. When these elements synchronize—brand strategy, visual identity, copywriting, web design, and SEO—it’s like a symphony playing in perfect harmony. They amplify each other's strengths, reinforcing your brand’s impact and creating an unforgettable experience.

Crafting a Cohesive Digital Visual Identity

Ever seen a brand's visuals and instantly felt a connection? That's the power of a cohesive visual identity—something that goes beyond pretty pictures. It's about weaving a story without uttering a single word.

And the stats don't lie. Studies reveal that 94% of first impressions are design-related (Source). And, get this—consistent brand presentation across all platforms increases revenue by up to 23% (Source). That's right—visuals are the heartbeat of your brand's trustworthiness.

Why Visual Identity Matters

Your visuals are the first hello, the sneak peek, and the vibe of your brand. They're more than colors and logos; they're your silent storytellers. Creating a visually appealing brand identity isn't just about catching eyes; it’s about capturing hearts. It’s the art of sparking emotions, evoking thoughts, and fostering trust.

Consistency is Key

Think of your brand identity as the star of a show. From your website to social media and every touchpoint in between, it’s essential to maintain visual consistency. Why? Because that’s how you build trust. Consistency isn’t boring; it's building familiarity, a visual footprint that your audience can recognize in a sea of endless content.

Tropicana knows the importance of remaining consistent. I'll never forget walkign through the grocery store and seeing a new orange juice product on the shelf. It looked modern. Sleek. And then I looked closer. It was Tropicana Pure Premium Orange Juice... redesigned and repackaged.

(I'm not a huge O.J.-drinker so this didn't affect me more than thinking, "That's weird.")

But apparently, O.J. drinkers were NOT having it.

Tropicana experienced quite a bit of backlash. People criticized it so much that Tropicana had to revert back to its original, well-loved packaging.

Tropicana's sales dropped by 20% (a loss of $30 million) in a span of 2 months, and overall, they lost a total of more than $50 million during this rebrand and repackaging fiasco.

Here's big part of the reason for the failure: Tropicana had built up years of brand consistency and loyalty. Their signature orange with the straw poked through was how their customers recognized and trusted their brand. Rather than redesigning and modernizing one or two elements, they dove head-first and redesigned all of it. It was a massive change to make. If you're going to rebrand and repackage a product you've spent years building, do it slowly and very strategically so you don't lose brand recognition.

Tips for Crafting Consistency

Start with defining your brand's visual elements—colors, fonts, imagery style. Ensure they resonate with your brand's personality and the story you want to tell. And make sure they're something your ideal audience actually wants to look at. Then, splash these elements across all your digital platforms. From your website banners to Instagram stories, keep them aligned and recognizable.

Optimizing Custom Web Design for Branding and SEO

Crafting a compelling online presence isn't just about a pretty website—it's the marriage of smart design, authentic branding, and a killer SEO strategy that sets the stage for success.

When diving into custom web design, it's not just about aesthetics. Implement a design that's a mirror of your brand—one that captures its essence, its story, and its vibe. Your layouts should be intuitive, with a user-friendly interface and visuals that evoke your brand's emotions. Blend style and substance; make it visually interesting while guiding visitors seamlessly through their journey.

Pair that stunning design with a robust SEO strategy. Optimize every element—titles, meta descriptions, keywords, and internal links—within the design framework. Ensure your website speaks the language of search engines, enhancing your visibility and ranking.

To make this happen, you're likely going to need to invest in strategic planning. Begin with brand positioning and identify the core values you want to convey. (I'd also recommend diving into all other elements of an effective brand strategy).

Then, create a website strategy before you dive into your custom web design. Make sure your strategy embodies your values, purpose, and positioning in every pixel. Read more: Mastering the Art of a Website Strategy.

And finally, intertwine an SEO strategy throughout the design, ensuring your brand ranks high in search results.

Your website's design and SEO strategy are a dynamic duo—they don't just coexist; they enhance each other. A sleek design might catch someone's eye, but without an SEO strategy, it might remain unnoticed. Likewise, SEO tactics without a user-centric design won't catch the attention of your audience. It's the harmony of both that helps catapult your brand's success.

Take a look at Sydney. She's a photographer in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and she came to Sunday Muse STRUGGLING. She wasn't booking out her calendar. She wasn't booking the best clients. Her website no longer resonated with her (and clearly the people she was trying to reach). And her SEO? Oof.

But after working together on her website design and SEO? She's having her biggest year ever:

  • She's raised her rates TWICE.

  • Her SEO is booming, and she's consistently the #1 search result for her target search terms.

  • She's almost completely booked out for the year (and very well might be by the time I get this published).

  • And she constantly has people tleling her how much they love her website. The common comments? 1. It's beautiful and very much "Sydney," 2. "It's easy to navigate", and 3. "I can find what I need without issue."

That's the power of strategic design intertwined with SEO wizardry—higher traffic, better visibility, and more conversions.

Strategies for Launching and Sustaining a Brand Online

Once you've got a solid brand strategy, consistent and beautiful brand visuals, copy that converts, a beautiful website design that embodies everything you've worked on, and a powerful SEO strategy, it's time to launch all this goodness into the world.

And launching a brand isn't just about making a grand entrance—it's also about the consistent journey that follows.

Here's how to not only launch...but sustain growth:

Craft an Epic Launch

It's not just about announcing your presence; it's about making an impact.

Here are some tips for planning your launch.

  1. Start with a bang by setting clear objectives.

  2. Create a launch schedule. I recommend working backwards from your launch date.

  3. Have a strong call-to-action that makes people WANT to look at your new website. (Most people won't care about your new website. Give them a reason to care.) Can you host a giveaway? Can you offer a promotion? Can you gamify it by creating a scavenger hunt on your website?

  4. Ask other people to share your website for you. Make sure these are not your competitors, lol. Send them done-for-you graphics, copy, and instructions for sharing and helping you promote. And offer to help them in the future when they need some extra promo!

  5. Create buzz through social media teasers, engaging content, or sneak peeks into what's coming.

And remember, consistency in messaging and visual elements amplifies your brand...even during launch.

Staying Power through Consistency

After the launch, keep the momentum going.

Here I am, your broken record again...Consistency is key.

Maintain your brand's voice and aesthetic across all platforms—social media, website, email marketing.

Engage your audience regularly with valuable content.

Be present, be engaging, and be you.

Remember, every touchpoint is a chance to reinforce your brand.

Longevity via Ongoing Marketing

Launching isn't the finish line; it's the start of a marathon. Plan for the long haul. Consider ongoing marketing plans tailored to sustain and grow your brand. Whether it's content marketing, email newsletters, webinars, or collaborations, ensure your strategies align with your brand's narrative. Create a content calendar to maintain consistency and relevancy.

Case Study: Nuuds—A Brand that Nailed It

Take inspiration from Nuuds, a fashion brand that focuses on neutral colors. They nailed their launch by unveiling their unique brand story through a captivating graphics and video on social media. Their website's visually stunning yet minimalistic design attracted visitors, and they kept the engagement alive with regular behind-the-scenes posts, user-generated content, and influencer collaborations post-launch. Their ongoing marketing strategies include exclusive sneak peeks for email subscribers and staying relatable on social media. Today, they boast a strong, engaged community and a rapidly growing customer base.
